Instructor: Nicole Weldy
Build a strong foundation in drawing while exploring how core concepts translate across other artistic media. In this class, you'll develop essential skills such as rendering textures, understanding the human figure, and drawing objects in perspective—key building blocks that will also support creative work in painting, digital media, and beyond. Art history references and the use of photographic and observational resources will guide your studies and enhance your understanding of form, technique, and expression.
We'll begin with the basics using an HB pencil, then expand into other materials—like watercolor, markers, and digital tools—offering opportunities to apply foundational drawing principles in new ways. Each student will be encouraged to experiment and choose their preferred medium or concept to concentrate on as the course advances. The class will be tailored towards the individual interests and the goals of the students.
For the first class, bring a #2 or HB pencil (mechanical or wooden) and a drawing pad (9” x 12” preferred—but any size you have is welcome). The instructor will provide and introduce sample drawing paper meant for different mediums as the session progresses. Featured student works shown are from optional weekly assignments that many created at a scale of 4” x 6,” manifesting that developing concepts on a smaller scale can result in great artwork, serve as preparatory work for larger pieces, and contribute to a varied art portfolio.
